An art form turning comment threads into art, all at Reddit

Here is a latest trick of converting comment threads into art form. This is an artist at Reddit who prides himself on being awful. The speedy painter calls himself ‘Shitty_Watercolour’. The community site has sprawling threads of comments and he goes on to them to depict action in them and make them into a form of art. There are opinions which are not at all flattering and yet he continues to do so but his art form is easily recognisable from any corner. His sea of screengrabs and animated GIFs are unique and identifiable.

He said, “I started doing watercolors after I found an old painting set that I must have been given when I was younger.” He is an 18 year-old artist who does not like to reveal his name and mailed all this information via Wired. He went on to say, “I already frequented Reddit, and it was only a case of putting the two together that my account came around.”

He puts up these artworks having been inspired by reddit itself. In fact he said that about 99 percent of his art form was from Reddit. The watercolours used in the art work are entirely original and his is the first kind who has used the website as a launch pad for something like this. He calls it internet fame as thousands of viewers comment on his art form.
Reddit is largely based on text and thumbnails and despite this; it serves as a rich and creative resource for the visual artists. Just imagine you have an artist who is ready to paint something in lead of your comment. This creates a circle of expression where commenters think of commenting in a particular manner thinking of what the painter might draw.

Erik martin, reddit general manager said, “The really great thing about things like Shitty Watercolour is [the posts are] unexpected. When you go into a comment thread and the first time you see it, you’re like, ‘Oh, a lot of work went into that!’ … It’s one of the nice sort of gems that make comments worth exploring in reddit.”

The unnamed artist started off with re-creating photos that people had posted on the site. Ever since he has now started moving into illustrating stories that appear in the AskReddit subcategory and also in providing visual interpretations of reddit commenters’ usernames. Have a look at his visual expertise and decide for yourself how artful it is.
