Volkswagon’s New Beetle revealed with a bang of Soundmachines

The debut of the New Beetle from Volkswagen was nothing short of spectacular as it was shown off at IAA motor show in September. All thanks to a Berlin-based company which came up with the product called Soundmachines, which is a visual turntable that comes three folds better literally. It was an extravaganza with an interactive musical performance with a custom-built music turntable that plays record sized discs. The primary idea behind this kind of presentation was to evoke the involvement of the performer as well as the audience too whether they were young, old or middle aged.

Emulating the look of a most tech savvy unconventional record player, Soundmachines is draped in sleek glass covered case installed by Jens’ team and interestingly the individual units play a pre-installed disc having concentric geometric patterns with the control signals being translated for Ableton Live. The discs were produced specially for this performance having concentrated geometric patterns and the music chosen for the spectacle was put forth by Yannik Labbe. The whole rig was then setup with an Arduino processing software to read the patterns in real time to control the tracks.

It took nearly six weeks to complete this whole project with the inclusion of a production set to generate the visuals on a 2 meter wide LED wall for which linear monochromatic composition were triggered via the sound analytics and camera tracking system.
